Lorraine Kelly shocks her fans with her reason for continuing to work for another 30 years: “If I quit now, it would have serious repercussions…”

Lorraine Kelly has no plans to slow down anytime soon. The beloved TV presenter, who has been a staple on British television for over four decades,

is determined to keep doing what she loves well into her nineties. Despite turning 65,

Lorraine insists that retirement is not on the horizon, embracing a youthful outlook on life and career.

A Passion for Her Work

Having celebrated 40 years on screen last year and receiving a BAFTA for her outstanding contributions to television, Lorraine remains as enthusiastic as ever.

She describes her job as a privilege, stating that she would continue hosting her morning show until she is 95 if given the chance.

“I couldn’t give up the show because I love it – honestly, I’d do it until I was 95!” she said. “When you’re lucky enough to skip to your work – without sounding like Snow White – why would I not?”

For Lorraine, every guest she interviews, whether a Hollywood A-lister or an everyday hero, is an opportunity to share meaningful stories with her audience. Early in her career, she admitted to feeling nervous, but now, she approaches interviews with confidence, ensuring that her guests feel comfortable and look their best.

“At the start, I was quite nervous, but I don’t get anxious anymore because I think, ‘This person is coming to talk to me. It’s my job to make them look the best we possibly can.’ It doesn’t matter whether you’re Meryl Streep or a wee lady who’s done an amazing thing.”

She acknowledges that television has evolved over the years, with its fair share of challenges and industry shifts, but she remains passionate about her work. “There have been storms along the way and so many regime changes, but I feel as if we’re in a really good place. The show’s doing really well.”

Defying Age with a Positive Attitude

Lorraine refuses to conform to societal expectations about aging. Inspired by actress Helen Mirren’s philosophy, she embraces every moment with enthusiasm. “I don’t feel my age. I certainly don’t act my age!” she laughed. “I love the way Helen Mirren says to embrace everything and enjoy every single second of what you’re doing. She said, ‘I’m not growing old, I’m growing up.’ But I’ve got no intention of growing up, thank you very much!”

Balancing Work and Family Life

One recent change in Lorraine’s routine has been cutting back to four days a week on her morning show, a decision she initially hesitated about. However, she has since found it beneficial for both her personal and professional life.

“Not presenting on Fridays gives me a chance to breathe and brings me in line with everyone else,” she explained. “Phil and Holly used to do four days, lovely Ben and Cat do four. Susanna does four and three. I wasn’t sure about it at first because I’ve been working five days a week for 40 years. It was a wee bit of a wrench. But sometimes, you’ve just got to take a step back in order to appreciate what you’ve got.”

This adjustment has allowed her to spend more time with her mother, who has been facing health challenges. “My mum has this horrible kidney problem, but she’s doing OK now. As far as looking after her goes, also with Billie and then the writing, it has been a good change.”

A Proud and Playful Grandmother

Lorraine’s family life has taken on new joy with the arrival of her granddaughter, Billie, in August last year. She and her husband, Stephen Smith, have been married since 1992, and their daughter, Rosie, has now become a mother herself.

“Billie is the light of my life,” Lorraine gushed. “I really miss Billie when I’m not with her. They’re an hour away [in north London], and I babysit as often as I can, but I don’t interfere. I’m just there. I love the fact that I’m Granny Smith!”

Far from being a traditional grandmother, Lorraine embraces a fun and adventurous approach to the role. “I’m a mischievous granny. As Billie gets older, we’ll get up to all sorts of nonsense. I want to take Billie travelling everywhere on adventures, like to see the penguins in Antarctica.”

For Lorraine, being a grandparent offers a fresh perspective on life. “When you’re a grandparent, you see the world through their wee eyes and rediscover everything.”

Speaking Her Mind

Despite her warm and cheerful television persona, Lorraine is not afraid to voice her opinions. However, she admits that she has stepped back from using X (formerly Twitter) due to the negativity on the platform.

She also believes in holding people accountable rather than outright canceling them. “If somebody is misbehaving, being inappropriate, and making anyone feel uncomfortable, they have to be called out so they can apologise,” she stated, referencing a recent situation with Gregg Wallace. “I object strongly to people enabling that sort of behaviour. You’ve got to be strong as a boss and say, ‘No.’”

At the same time, she is firmly against cancel culture. “I’m against cancelling people. You’ve got to hear their point of view, so you can go, ‘They’re being an absolute t**t, what a load of old twaddle.’ You should never be cancelled for something that you believe, unless it is something heinous.”

She added, “If we only talked to people that we agreed with, we’d be living in an echo chamber, all patting each other on the back saying, ‘How smug are we?’”

No Plans to Retire Anytime Soon

With an enduring love for her career, a growing family, and an unapologetic zest for life, Lorraine Kelly shows no signs of slowing down. Whether on-screen, spending time with her granddaughter, or speaking out on important issues, she remains an inspiring figure.

At 65, she is living proof that age is just a number and that passion, enthusiasm, and a little bit of mischief can keep life exciting well into the future.
