David Beckham’s actions were assessed by the American press as “wanting to rebuild the team’s confidence in time” after the shock of the Leagues Cup. 

Before that, Inter Miami, without the long-term star Messi, advanced to the round of 16, leading the opponent Colombus Crew 2-0 until the 65th minute, 

but eventually collapsed to lose 2-3, ending their chance to defend the Leagues Cup title.

The painful defeat caused coach Tata Martino to be criticized, and angry Inter Miami fans questioned when Messi would return, while putting pressure on the club’s leadership. 

The team of which David Beckham is the president and co-owner also has only one big chance in the 2024 season, 

which is to win the MLS Cup at the end of the year to reaffirm its position.

Inter Miami currently has 53 points after 25 matches, with 9 more rounds to reach the historic goal.

For the rest, Inter Miami is sure to be in the 2024 MLS playoffs, a goal they missed last season, to conquer the MLS Cup championship as Mr. David Beckham’s ambition since deciding to establish the team in 2018.

However, this ambition is facing many challenges, when top clubs in MLS such as LA Galaxy recruited big star Marco Reus after owning player Riqui Puig from Barcelona in the summer of 2022. Meanwhile, Los Angeles FC has famous French player, veteran striker Olivier Giroud just joined goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Currently, the mid-season transfer window of MLS 2024 has ended (from August 14), but clubs can still recruit players as free agents until September 15. Inter Miami has run out of opportunities to buy Mexican center-back Cesar Montes from UD Almeria (Spain). While many other clubs are still actively recruiting free agents from Europe, to increase their strength when they have a place in the MLS playoffs (the list was cut in October).

Meanwhile, the most famous star who has just joined MLS, midfielder Marco Reus, said: “I have not received a congratulatory message from Messi. Maybe it will not happen. But it is great to face him in the tournament. I had the chance to face Messi about 2 or 3 times at Borussia Dortmund with Barcelona and between the German national team and Argentina. Messi is really the best ever. In Germany, we do not care much about MLS, but we have started to pay more attention since Messi signed with Inter Miami”.
